Brian Toews and Brenda Mellon

Between us, we have spent over 50 years teaching at the college level. Over these many semesters, we have been learning how to ask good questions and think well, piecing together good answers. Those answers are rarely easy. While their direction might be clear, their depth, nuance, and application require considerable thought and conversation. After years of long discussions like this over dinner, we decided it was time to write.

We weren’t sure how this project would affect our marriage, but it turns out, we make a great team in this area, too. Brian brings the Old Testament expertise. Brenda distills his thoughts into something clear and understandable. It’s been mostly fun, and we’ve both grown and learned a lot from each other and the texts themselves. Writing together has prompted more years of lunch and dinner conversation, the fruit of which we hope you learn from and enjoy.

While our educations and accomplishments (included below) have certainly helped, we think our qualifications for writing center on a love of God, His Word, and the pursuit of Wisdom in our own lives. Our life together has been shaped by Brian’s illnesses and God continuing to extend his life beyond all expectations. This reminder of our mortality has led us to “number our days,” as Moses says in Psalm 90, “to gain a heart of wisdom.”

While our years together may turn out to be short, our days are sweet. We’ve frontloaded life goals and fun, spending our time intentionally. Outside of writing and spending time with our families, Brian enjoys riding his motorcycle and any form of football. Brenda loves all things food, France, and achieving pretty much any goal. We travel a lot, laugh often, and enjoy one another immensely.
